About website design
How do I know we’ll make a great team?
Well, you don't, which is why we should chat first and get to know each other. But here’s why my clients love working with me:
- They can give me a handful of features they want and rely on me to translate them into a beautiful, easy-to-use website.
- They get a complete explanation for every question they ask.
- They know I’m committed to helping them succeed.
But… newsflash! … I am not for everyone. Some people appreciate my total transparency and honesty, others prefer a different approach.
Which platforms do you use?
I researched and tried several platforms before settling on WordPress for its excellent user and admin experience. I often use the Genesis framework because it's simple, secure, and robust. For some clients, Squarespace works well enough and I'm happy to work in Squarespace by request. Plus…
- All websites I create are optimized for mobile but will look great on any size screen
- Excellent SEO is baked right into the framework
- You can use plugins to extend your website’s functionality
- You can add unlimited pages, posts, and all kinds of integrations
- It’s easy to update your website on any device
Why should I hire a designer?
Well, you could take the DIY route. Many people do. Here’s why I believe hiring a designer is the right choice:
- Time. When you try to create your own website, you’re taking time away from doing things you love that bring you profit.
- Knowledge. A new user usually takes twice as long to do something simply because she doesn’t know and has to Google or wait for a kind soul to help.
- Experience. I’ve made the mistakes (and learned from them) so you don’t have to. I can connect dots you don’t even see yet.
How long will it take to build my website?
Depending on the size and complexity of your website, how much content you have ready to go, and how fast you respond with feedback, your website could be finished in 2-8 weeks. Most website projects wrap up in about 4 weeks.
How much will my website cost?
It depends on your needs, including the size of your website and what functionalities you require. I take all your needs into account when I create your quote. Most website projects are in the $3,000 – $8,000 range with branding and copywriting included.
What other costs should I expect?
Domain – this is a yearly cost, usually under $20. If you don’t already have a registrar, I recommend Hover because they’re super easy to work with.
Hosting – this is an ongoing expense for the life of your website. For a WordPress website, figure about $120/yr. For a Squarespace website, figure about $216/yr.
Maintenance – this is routine care, much like oil changes and tire rotation for your car. We're talking software updates, backups, malware scans, and more. Prices start at $100/mo.
Paid plugins – if you need membership, LMS, or eCommerce functionality, it usually comes in the form of a paid plugin or service.
Who owns the content on my new website?
After your final payment, the content on your website will be yours unless otherwise specified in the contract.
Will my website work on mobile devices?
Of course. These days, at close to 80% of traffic to most website comes from mobile so every website I create is optimized for it. And no, it won't be a dumbed down version of your website, either.
Do you provide training?
Absolutely. You'll get 1:1 training on how to use your new website's dashboard so you can update your blog, pages, and menus like a champ. And you'll even have a video recording for future reference.
Where can I see examples of your work?
You can see some of my recent work on my Portfolio page [LINK coming soon]. It’s not all of my work, but it will give you an idea of my design style. Quick disclaimer: some websites may not look the same as they did when I finished them – that’s because once a project is finished, the client has every right to make changes to the website.
Do you offer support after my new website is launched?
Yes! Ongoing support is standard for websites I design. Please see Website maintenance for packages.
How do we get started?
The best way is to hop on Zoom with me for 15 minutes to make sure we're a good fit. It's a free consultation, no sales pitch, I promise.
About website support & maintenance
Is there a time commitment?
For most clients, this is an ongoing service for the life of the website. It allows you to focus on your own strengths instead of dealing with the tech headache. But if you're really not sure if this will help you save time and frustration, the minimum time commitment is 3 months.
Why can't I just click to buy a care plan now?
I happily offer ongoing care for any website I design and the discussion about it is part of the process. Websites designed by others require a thorough assessment to make sure I can provide the level of care you and your website deserve.
